We have all been to workshops and planning sessions that never seem to go anywhere and are just glorified talkfests. What a waste of everyone's time.
I take a pragmatic attitude into any facilitation session.
Effective facilitation requires a range of skills, including active listening, communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and the ability to create a supportive and inclusive environment. A good facilitator is neutral and non-judgmental, and strives to ensure that all participants feel valued and heard.
We have all been involved in planning workshops that never conclude with an agreed outcome or a timeline for implementing an action plan without accountability and completion date.
Over the years I have facilitated strategy workshops for a variety business boards, NFP boards. business partnerships, families in business, community organisations and business networks. All ending with mixed outcomes, many positive and some, I will admit, were sabotaged buy the dream stealers in the room.
It is critical to gain agreement on the workshop outcome. You need to read and manage the room. Every group is different, I have a proven facilitation methodology that has ensured all attendees are given a chance to come to the session prepared for robust and honest discussions.
My approach to facilitation is to first seek to understand the company purpose and the segment they operate in. Before any session I send out a confidential vision and culture related questionnaire.
It's important to meet with the leadership or convenor of the session to ensure I understand the reason for the session and the desired outcome for the organisation.
Follow up is a key success of any facilitated session and it's a must to meet with the leadership to verify the conclusions.
The leadership must take ownership of any actions, targets, timelines and results monitoring. The leaders must keep the momentum moving.
